Žagarė

Žagarė is one of the oldest towns in Lithuania. Its history dates back to 1198, when Raktė Castle was first mentioned in historical chronicles. Today, Žagarė offers a rich variety of natural and cultural landmarks – from ancient dolomite outcrops formed millions of years ago to the longest esker in Lithuania, as well as hillforts and numerous sites of historical, architectural and industrial heritage.

Project introduction

Žagarės Vyšnių Valda (Zagare Cherry Estate), established in 2011, is a joint venture between the United Kingdom and Lithuania aimed at creating a unique cultural heritage and tourism destination in the historic town of Žagarė, located on the Lithuanian–Latvian border.

The project seeks to renovate, restore and bring new life to three important historic buildings: the former dairy, the windmill and the stableman’s house. All of them are situated within the grounds of the old manor estate.

The concept of the project respects the local history and landscape while promoting sustainable, long-term and environmentally responsible development that will contribute to the economic and cultural vitality of the region, encourage tourism and business, and help create new jobs.

It is planned that these buildings will complement the existing manor complex and stud farm, creating a peaceful and attractive environment for hospitality, accommodation and a variety of activities.

The project is being developed near the town of Žagarė in northern Lithuania, within a historic manor park created in the 19th century by Count Lev Alexander Naryshkin, which today forms part of Žagarė Regional Park. The idea behind the project is to sensitively restore and adapt the historic estate buildings and their surroundings for new use while preserving their authenticity and cultural value.

Žagarė is conveniently located approximately 2.5 hours’ drive from Vilnius and about 1.5 hours from Riga. The town can serve as a convenient stop for travellers moving between the two capitals, as a base for exploring local attractions, or as a destination in its own right.

Nearby places of interest include Rundāle Palace in Latvia and the famous Hill of Crosses in Šiauliai, as well as many other cultural and natural landmarks.
